Built-in wardrobes: measure the clothes before the doors

Plan hanging, folded clothing and accessible storage before choosing the wardrobe frontage.

Prepared by JW Design Studio Pte. Ltd.

What to decide before commissioning the work

Start with an inventory of long hanging clothes, short hanging clothes, folded items and luggage. Different categories need different usable heights and shelf depths. A uniform grid may photograph neatly while leaving wasted space above short garments or placing daily items beyond convenient reach.

Compare options against the same requirements

Set the internal arrangement against the actual bedroom furniture plan. Wardrobe doors, drawers and the bedroom door must work with the bed and bedside furniture in position. Clarify whether overhead storage needs a step, and keep future access to adjoining services or equipment available.

Your planning checklist

Bring a measured floor plan, photographs of the existing condition and a list of items you intend to retain. Use the checks below to make the consultation specific to your home.

  • Measure the longest hanging garments and large stored items
  • Test door and drawer opening against the bed position
  • Separate daily-access from seasonal storage
  • Confirm usable internal dimensions after hardware and backing

What to ask for in the quotation

Ask for a written, itemised scope. An online guide is not a quotation: product selection, site condition and the measured work determine what can be proposed. Resolve assumptions before approving fabrication or installation.

  • Internal hanging, shelf and drawer schedule
  • Door mechanism, tracks or hinge models
  • Exposed panels and ceiling junctions
  • Handles, lighting and internal fittings separately identified

Prepare your consultation brief

Select the points you still need to clarify. Nothing is submitted or stored.

Common questions

How should I prepare for a discussion about built in wardrobe?

Start with the actual property condition and your required outcome. In particular: measure the longest hanging garments and large stored items; test door and drawer opening against the bed position; separate daily-access from seasonal storage; confirm usable internal dimensions after hardware and backing. Bring photographs and a floor plan so these points can be checked against the space.

Does this guide include a fixed price or approval for my home?

No. Prices require an agreed scope and site information. Where work needs assessment or approval, confirm the requirements with the appropriate authority, managing agent and appointed professional before it starts.
